About the Author
Dr. Robert O. Uppgaard received his D.D.S. degree from the University of Minnesota. He spent the next six years a s apart-time instructor there and pursued two years of postgraduate study in oral pathology. Following twenty years of general dentistry practice in Minneapolis, he moved to a rural area in northern Minnesota, where h established a family practice with an emphasis on TMJ disorder. For two years he commuted to the University of Minnesota to serve as an assistant professor in a troubleshooting capacity, after which he began his ten-year outcome-based study of TMJ patients. Dr. Uppgaard’s practice has been limited to TMJ disorder since 1990.

Before you undergo painful, expensive and often ineffective TMJ treatments with a dentist, I implore you to buy this book. First time I had severe TMJ, I could only eat baby food. Chiropractor could do nothing. Dentist wanted me to wear a giant, painful brace for months & if it didn’t work, get a 2nd total dental revision (I already had one) for a total of $15,000. In desperation, I found this book on Amazon and in 2 days, the TMJ was cured.10 years later, during a dental implant, I got severe TMJ again. The dentist tried to help, then agreed this book, which he had read, might be my best chance. Again, in 2 days, TMJ was gone.The amazing side effect has been that the migraines I’ve had since childhood have also nearly disappeared.Please give this book a chance and continue doing the exercises even after the TMJ is gone. In the four years since I’ve suffered from this debilitating condition I’ve tried just about every treatment, short of surgery. I’ve had three rounds of physical therapy, muscle relaxers, high powered NSAIDS (which I took for a year and a half prior to it wrecking my stomach), meditation, yoga (one of the best things yet), craniosacral (also very helpful), and upper cervical chiropractic. I also had a nightguard, which made me have more pain, where there was none previously.I honestly can’t recommend anything the mainstream medical community has to offer- especially dentists. Only the alternative medicine was of any help to me. I tried the excercises in this book and it made my pain MUCH worse. I showed my craniosacral therapist the book and she immediately said to stop doing three of the exercises. Use with great caution and if you have a physical therapist, please ask them prior to trying anything in this book. It’s dangerous and may make you worse! The one involving opening your mouth wide with three fingers in it is especially bad for those of us who have hyper-mobility (our jaw already opens too wide). My next attempt to get help is from prolotherapy. I wish you luck with this condition, which is one of the worst things you can suffer from and I warn you that you aren’t likely to get much help from your doctors. Look elsewhere.
It worked for me. 9 days into the wellness program I was off of all medication. The jaw pain was the first to disappear and the tightness slowly dissipated over the next few weeks.I had been dealing with the most recent flare for months. My range of motion is back! Prior to this flare I dealt with occasion jaw pain.I thought I would never get better. I hope the practices as prescribed by the book are helpful going forward. I feel the best I have felt in a long time. My teeth actually line up better than they have in a long time. The tongue posture recommendation in the book has helped me conquer my clenching habit and relax my face in a way I have not been able to do in years!I highly recommend this book. It helped me take a look at my overall lifestyle and how it influenced all aspects of my health. I wish one of the several health care providers that I saw for this condition had recommended it. I believe I would have had a quicker recovery from this flare. Thank you Dr. Uppgaard! I am grateful this book was available. I can eat pizza again and sing! It has greatly improved my quality of life!
I don't know what new information I thought I was going to glean from this book, but I suppose the hope of being pain-free drove my purchase. Honestly, an hour spent on Google searching the tmj forum and the like will give you all the exercises, and other information. So save your money and do that instead. Also, if your doctor or dentist hasn't shared enough helpful information with you about how to control your TMJ or like in my case TMJD, that you are considering purchasing this book, get yourself a new doctor who understands that being in chronic pain is debilitating and depressing not merely a nuisance to be treated with anti-depressants and muscle relaxants. Also, look into prolotherapy; it has helped a lot of people with TMJD, including me, and of course, make sure you have a good fitting night guard, which will save your teeth. Good luck.
great book to educate myself on the TMJ issue. For anyone out there concern about the health of TMJ, please pratice advices in this book before getting an super expensive splint which might cause bite changes and further postural and emotional stress. Most splint therapy comes with a teeth adjustment and the whole thing would cause you at least $5k if braces are not suggested. At least ask some 2nd opinion before acting on it. In my case, it has been a total nightmare. the bite changes cause a posture alternation as well, very stressful. Also, try not let those dentist scare you and let you believe you have a terrible problem. Most time a good posture and life style can significantly reduce the pain. Our body including our jaw joints are amazing and able to adapt(in most cases). good luck and hope this one can be a great tool for you.
I was introduced to this book over ten years ago when first diagnosed with and being treated for TMJ. I eventually got control of my symptoms but the book has never been far from my bedside. I have been trough small flare ups and others much worse in the time since, and this book has helped me through it every time. The diagrams and decriptions explain the pain when doctors and dentists cannot. Just when I am feeling like my pain makes no sense, this book is there to remind me that I am not crazy. I lean on this book so much that I recently lent it to a relative who had symptoms that doctors could not explain. They mirrored my own symptoms and perplexed doctors from years ago. Instead of insisting that they return my book, I have bought another. This book is well worth every penny.
I am only in about 20 pages, but I love it! It really hit home from pg 1. I just got it but I'm hopeful I can make some progress following this program! Will update later
