MEDICINE / HOLISTIC HEALTH Medical Herbalism is a foundational textbook on the scientific principles of therapeutic herbalism and their application in medicine. Based on the author’s more than twenty-five years of herbal practice, it contains comprehensive information concerning the identification and use of medicinal plants both by chemical structure and physiological effect, the art and science of making herbal medicine, and the challenge to current research paradigms posed by complex plant medicines. The author details the intricate chemistry behind herbalism, providing for the first time important background and insights into how herbal remedies are able to achieve their results and the limitations and potential of viewing herbs chemically. He then presents in-depth discussions of specific ailments and treatments organized by each of the major body systems, as well as delving into the special needs of children and the elderly. He includes the most up-to-date information on preparations, dosage, and contraindications; information on toxicology and the issues involved in determining dosage and formulation types for an individual; and the pros and cons of both commercial and traditional techniques. His materia medica presents 150 of the most beneficial herbs used in treatment practices, identifying not only their present uses but also their historical derivations. With additional sections devoted to the principles of green medicine, the history of Western herbalism, the variety of other medical modalities using medicinal plants, and an extensive resource directory, Medical Herbalism is the comprehensive textbook all students and practitioners of clinical herbalism need to develop their healing practices. I own and have read many many books on herbalism, medicinal herbs and their uses, herbal medicine, etc. and this one, although its a literal textbook, is the most useful so far. I think it completes any collection on medicinal herb literature since it gives a recent, scientific explanation of WHY components of certain plants help certain conditions, without suggesting that it is only the isolated chemicals within plants that is therapeutic. Has a wonderful section on the organic chemistry which I find incredibly useful, since most books merely mention an active compound without showing/explaining exactly what it is and how it works in the body. Likewise most chemistry books do not go into any depth about compounds found in herbs, so this book is a great bridge between herbalism and the chemistry of medicine. I have taken an introductory year of organic chemistry and biochemistry so the information is very digestible- but for those who have not, I think this introduction to the most important ideas of organic chemistry and biochemistry as they relate to herbs may be a great gateway. There are numerous videos on each subject (like bonding or molecular structure) on youtube that can be used to supplement the information.Even if one were to ignore the entire chemistry section, the rest of the book is well organized and full of very useful information, such as dosing, cross references of common/Latin plant names, explanations of common ailments, and a section on how to make remedies using the plants. Very highly recommended.
I am a greenhorn (novice) on all this Herbal stuff. I was taught to keep an open mind, and at least try. So when I ordered the book I had no idea on how complete, informative and sometimes big fancy words usage I was in store for. I knew I was in for some learning, when I unpackaged the book and it overwhelmed me with information. I didnt give up, I kept reading, and it all seemed to make scene. The information is well laid out, and I can usually find exactly what symptom or illness I am looking for, along with suggestions for remedies. I may have been greenhorn on the Herbal stuff, but after browsing thru the book I feel that I can make correct informed decisions on a herbal remedy, and I can even lookup the correct dosage. I DO NOT regret buying this book. If you want to be well informed and make good decisions, buy the book, and then put some effort into to educating yourself. If your the lazy type and want everything done for you, see a Herbal Specialist and it will cost you a lot more than the price of this book. I rate it as a BUY WELL WORTH THE MONEY, just dont get intimidated by all the big words.
This is a fantastic book for those already comfortable with herbalism. It's the first textbook I've seen on the subject. And I can't seem to put it down. I'd say this is better for someone comfortable in the basics of herbalism or medical professionals wanting to incorporate Western Herbalism into their practice.
This is full of useful information on medicinal plants. It is designed as a textbook. Covers chemistry and body systems very well. I bought as a reference book. It is an update to Medical Botany that I have in my library. Of course, you may want something specialized for your area of the world. I find Michael Moore's books great for the west.
I am a nurse and I love this book. I got it because I wanted to have a good resource for CAM (Complementary and Alternative Medicine) for my self and as a knowledge base for my patients. Not at all disappointed.
Be serious if you order anything by Hoffman. He is dense and comprehensive in everything he writes. That said, this is my second purchase from this UK-based source and both books arrived sooner than expected and in prime condition.
Great book ! Has whys and wherefores and even the chemistry breakdown of each herb. Written by a Doctor. This book is not only highly informative but it is GREAT for backing up the "pros" for the arguement for herbal and alternative healing and therapeutic uses of alternative healing.
Coming in at over 600 pgs., this text is a very workmanlike attempt to cover the field of medical herbalism. Every subarea is covered from classification to phytochemistry to pharmacology to preparation to treatment approaches. Hoffmann, too, is a died-in-the-wool herbalist who at every turn gives modern pharmacology its due but is also insistent that herbal medicine's complexity cannot be subsumed solely within the field of western medicine. His intellectual values are both traditional and progressive. Hoffmann also includes a detailed listing of references, a nice glossary, and numerous appendi of use to the budding medical herbalist.
