About the Author

Robert B. Reese received the B.S. degree from Louisiana Tech University, Ruston, in 1979 and the M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Texas A&M University, College Station, in 1982 and 1985, respectively, all in electrical engineering. He served as a Member of the Technical Staff of the Microelectronics and Computer Technology Corporation (MCC), Austin, TX, from 1985 to 1988. This book is meant as a supplement to my university's Microprocessors course which has a reputation for being difficult.This book was written by the professors that teach the course and it is extremely helpful in explaining the problems we are working through in class and in the lab. Assembly Language is new to me and so far this book as easy to follow in explaining it. It gives an in-depth discussion on each topic covered where the teacher does not have the time to read through via slides or other boring crap, so do yourself a favor and read the material along with the course and you will understand the problems and programs being designed in class.

Bought this book because I needed to get up to speed on the PIC quickly for a class with a hard project deadline.I have experience coding but none with PIC and only some with microcontrollers in general... and I am apparently not the target audience for this book. Chapters 1-7 take you through assembly on the PIC; not useful for me at this point. Chapter 8 is where you actually start writing code in C and writing it to the chip. For me, that's where I'd start reading as I don't have time to go through the "here's an ADD instruction" portion of the book.I tend to start with the samples, and build off of them to get a decent handle on things - but there's something about these samples, they seem to use his libraries where you can't just plug that code into a new project and have it actually *compile*. If you need to know how to do something in particular, you'll end up bouncing between this book, the web, forums, and hopefully you've got someone who's smarter than you to just ask. The semester is almost over, the book didn't give me a better grasp of the chip, my code doesn't work, and I'm apparently so frustrated that I'd rather go write a review than work on my project any more tonight.I suppose it's all good news for Amazon; I'll likely end up getting a different PIC book instead.

Honestly, I'm not really sure how to review a textbook especially since I haven't actually used it for more than a day yet. Other than the fact that this isn't hardcover not much to complain about other than how overpriced college textbooks are and that they're basically the same between iterations. If you have a previous version and your professor doesn't mind, you can stick with the old one.

Great book if you want something that falls apart in your hands, within a few months after buying it. I'm now looking for chunks of pages that have gone missing over time and I can't find them. Maybe I was supposed to put it all in a sack ? Publisher Cengage won't back their product. I won't give them anymore of my money. There seems to be a crisis in the field of book binding but, perhaps like so many other dishonest businesses these days, it's intentional to have things fall apart. We humans were binding books just fine, a century ago.

Great book! I needed it for Dr. Jones' Microprocessors class. It definitely helps.

I used it to get to all the best places in Washington along my way up-port angela and such, explained the ferries and the options, websites and all, also the routes to Victoria Canada and the things to do there: I loved Canada by the way! I even left the book in a hotel realized it and called the hotel to pick it back up thank god they had it! I love this book!

My first step on planning any trip is to buy the Moon travel guide for wherever I'm going. I've been using them for years now and they've always led me to great hotels, delicious restaurants, and fun things to see. I only used the Seattle, Portland, and Oregon Coast chapters of this book (I read the Mt. Rainier chapter, but my visit there was so foggy that I couldn't see any of it), but with them I planned a perfect trip to the Pacific Northwest. Thanks to Moon for another excellent travel guide.

This was a huge hit with the receiver of this gift. I looked through it as well and remained impressed with all the information within the book.

Read this book to understand why. Brooks isn't preachy or didactic as a writer - she just lays out her experience and the facts she gathered along the way, and lets you draw your own conclusions as to how you might want to parent your own children and be mindful of allowing others to do as they wish. If only our government and legal system could do the same...

How are we judged as "good" parents and our children as successful while considering issues of race, gender, and socioeconomic status? How are we moved by the status games and the parenting competitions we play while scrolling through our feeds? Always mindful as we look forward and make those choices or, in many cases, imposed decisions about method of delivery, summer enrichment, daycares or the multitude of other weighty, anxiety-driven responsibilities we impose upon ourselves. Her candid writing is centered around an incident in which she left her son in the car while she ran into Target. An anonymous woman filmed the child in the car and notified the police. Brooks details this story while intertwining pieces of research from well-known parenting books and interviews with parenting experts.The book's scope seems too narrow to create a total picture of many of the fears and issues involved in parenting. It comes across as an extended article or not long enough to be a full study of parenting in book form. While she touches on other problems like physical and mental health, these sections lack the depth needed to examine the problems fully. Too much of the book revolves around her incident, ones like it, and the perceived harms a child could encounter. Kim Brooks's Small Animals is a personal and honest look at dealing with the "moral panics" of raising a child. Kim Brooks begins her book with a simple story: she left her young son for a few minutes in the car to go buy him a headset in a nearby shop. He was content to sit in his carseat and play on his iPad. All parents have most likely done something similar by the time their kids were six or so. But in Kim's case, a bystander captures pictures of her son alone in the car and called the police. This allegedly concerned citizen did not wait a few minutes to see if the mother returned to the car, or even engage the child in conversation to ask where his mom was. The bystander's first reaction was to call the police. The reflex in our society is to assume the parent is doing something wrong. The author of Small Animals, Kim Brooks, is able to deftly connect this personal narrative with a slew of contemporary research that describes just how anxious our society has become. I recommend this book highly; it's the best book on the trials and tribulations of modern day mothering I have read to date.

I am not a mother yet but we are trying to start a family so I have been reading a variety of books on parenting in an attempt to prepare myself. This one is almost making me rethink the whole idea...I really hate what parenting in this country has become, if this book is anything to go by, and hope not to get sucked into all the BS. Well-written with a variety of experts weighing in so I'm not going to ding it for being discouraging but holy cow. I wish it would have given more constructive suggestions for improving the parenting culture and getting rid of the irrational fear and the bubble-wrap mentality, not to mention how to get people to mind their own business in the absence of imminent danger (which did not exist in the case she describes)...so it lost a star for not doing that. There was NOTHING wrong with what she did and the situation should never have escalated to the point it did.

Well written description of ourselves, our angst and our children. Makes me wish that i had given my granddaughter more freedom. But my son, now 45 had tremendous freedom to fail...and did some of the time. Now a successful father, producer and independent man.

I learned more from this in an hour of sitting and flipping than I have from hours upon hours of searching the web for answers on similar topics. Extremely helpful book for those concerned with web security... covers topics that I've never heard others mention. Also, a lot of people online... specifically with say, PHP programming, will tell you some basic rule or procedure for verifying user input, but they don't explain fully the how and the why---it's like that all over the place---but this book does a very good job of explaining why the procedures and such in PHP or other languages are necessary, and in my case helped me to understand exactly why certain procedures should be employed. (Such as making sure user-submitted data is in the expected encoding, i.e. UTF8, etc.)

Some of the content is outdated but for the most part it did what I needed it to. I was looking for an intro into Web app vulnerabilities as I begin taking on more responsibility in that at work. I do like the layout as it is easy to understand and it walks me through the use of the various tools well. You can write volumes on each chapter that this book covers so know that this is an overview and you will be happy with the money that you spent on it.

I own every hacking exposed book ever printed that i am aware of. These are great sources for learning and structuring skills in many valuable situations. They are based on theory and have great examples when you would use the necessary solutions to achieve of overcome challenges.They are Great Books!! ---That is my opinion!

Very useful information and study guide..

Good book but you need to have fair understanding of Unix scripting to understand the code of some of the automated scripts that are used in the book and it doesn't mention in the book how those scripts exactly work

This book has some good advice on security issues that continue to develop and impact on innocent people's lives in unexpected ways. At the very least it puts you on alert to the risks and dangers present on the Web today, and gives some useful pointers on what to watch out for and how to ward off some of the assaults on rights and freedoms. It would appear that the Web has become a bit of a free for all where people now disregard and break the law on a daily basis with impunity. In the last few years the Web has made a joke of copyright as theft of property has become commonplace.

If you are considering reading this book, I encourage you to do so.I wouldn't say that I am well-read, but I have been blessed with educated grandparents who send me books they consider exceptional and meaningful. Although this book did not come to me through their recommendation, it easily keeps company with the classics and masterpieces that have. I have found kinship and inspiration in Kim, the protagonist, whose will is the bedrock on which her story rests. Her journey to escape poverty and find a meaningful adulthood is one that transcends backgrounds, but the rich culture of Kim's Chinese heritage is as important to her character as it is to the setting of this book. I can happily say I will be looking for more of Ms. Kwok's work.

I had some ambivalence about this book at first, and mostly read it out of curiosity because it received such great reviews. The ambivalence was due to similarities between my own life and the character's - I am Asian, I immigrated to the US when I was thirteen, my previously well educated and professional parents became rough laborers, we were poor, I strugged with language and assimilation, and went on to two Ivy Leagues. So I thought: what can this book possibly tell me? Should there be such books to further the stereotype of the Chinese immigrant, who came to the U.S. poverty stricken and struggle to become doctors and lawyers? I chose to read it for two reasons: curiosity, and the fact that the author gave up science to become a writer and obtain and MFA - not very Chinese. I realized she must have had guts to risk the more certain path of a structured profession, for a career in writing. So I gave it a go. In the end, I do have to admit that I am probably a biased reader. Having had first hand experiences quite similar to the character's, there were times when I broke down while reading the book. It uncovered a lot of wounds and shame that I thought had gone away. I relived many painful moments which had been forgotten or buried away, and reminded me of who I was. Again, I realize this comes from a very specific perspective, but for having reacquainted me with an old sad self, I give it five stars.

Girl in Translation by Jean Kwok is a moving novel about a young girl and her mother immigrating to New York in order to achieve a better life after the untimely death of the child's father. However, success in America isn't as easily gained as the mother hoped it would be. Now facing poverty, destitution, and a bitter family debt, Ah-Kimberly, the young daughter, fights and claws her way through the American schooling system by day, and a Chinese sweat shop by night, in order to make a better life for her, and her mother.I would classify this novel a bildungsroman - a coming of age story where the moral and psychological growth of the protagonist from child to adulthood is measured in the great change of the main character. The novel depicts the true struggles of immigrants that come to this country NOT looking for a handout. And the truth of it is, it's hard. Very hard.The novel shares the living conditions of the naive family as they attempt to make a life in America. They reside in a roach and rat infested apartment found for them by their jealous and superficial Aunt (who runs the sweat shop), where both Ma and Ah-Kimberly barely survive. There is no heat and they sleep under piles of clothing, mostly inadequate, for the harsh winters of Brooklyn. They make ends meet by eating small meals of rice, using their oven to provide heat in the small kitchen, and sewing blankets and clothes out of fabric they find in trash dumps.The American schooling system is cruel and unforgiving for Ah-Kim. She certainly didn't come through the soft education system of the current times where everyone gets 1,000 chances to do everything, to pass everything. Her teachers, specifically the men, are mean and cruel. They mock her, accuse her of cheating when she does start to make progress, and shame her socially. The kids, well - they are American kids - disrespectful and indifferent to anyone that isn't like them. I cried the most reading about her schooling, especially when she was so young. It pained me, as a teacher, to read the way adults responded to her, to the way the other students treated her, to the indifference of the teacher to help her. But, like a truly intelligent girl, she beats the odds of the public elementary school system and is afforded an opportunity to go to a very private and prestigious private school.Ah-Kimberly's climb to success is painful and scarred, which makes moments of triumph that much sweeter.Jean Kwok paints an emotional journey of Ah-Kim and one the reader will not forget. I still feel tightness in my chest when I remember the struggles of this kind, hardworking family of two. I cried multiple times by chapter four, and the pull on the heart only increases as the reader becomes more involved with the story.This is a book I highly recommend - in fact I'm going to request to teach this book next year in place of To Kill a Mockingbird - that is how strong of an impact it made on me. It gives insight to a different culture and I appreciated reading about the Asian sociodynamics rather than reading yet another book about the black/white dynamic in America. This opened my eyes to the depth and tradition long steeped within Asian communities. It was the perfect book to read after Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet (link for this review - found after Reached by Allie Condy on the same post). The weight and realism of the portions of the book which covered Kimberly’s home life and school life were not compatible with the romance novel tone/martyrdom of the love relationship with Matt. And I found myself really disliking the protagonist at the end, having made the choices she did. Those choices seemed to be a decision by the author to make her character more complex, for its own sake.We’re also missing a lot of physical descriptors of the main characters - Kimberly as she grows, more detail about Ma, and of key others like Aunt Paula. I found it odd for these characters to truly come to visual life solely on my imagination, without any prompting. About all I know is Kimberly doesn’t like makeup, feels awkward about clothes, and Ma is frail.

This was an interesting version of a "coming of age". The main characters immigrated from Hong Kong to NYC and faced adversity for many years before the "from rags to riches" aspect of the story came true. I never really understood why they left Hong Kong, as their life there didn't sound destitute.The quality of writing isn't excellent, but the book was easy to read in two sittings. There was an honesty to it, the characters came to life, and the descriptions and circumstances were convincing. The author focused on the misery many immigrants experience unless they are lucky enough to get a good education and change their life. The land of MILK AND HONEY is has flaws and the author lets it's readership know they include child labour and poverty.I enjoyed Kwok's story, it's a fast easy read.

Great book. It tells the story of a young girl and her mother struggling to survive as immigrants in Brooklyn. The book is filled with their triumphs and difficulties. It is inspiring and addictive.Wonderful story. I highly recommend it.
