GREAT book - especially if you are going to be in Ukraine as a Peace Corps Volunteer

Most of this book did shock me because I took it as the truth. When I talked to someone from Ukraine, that person claimed don't judge a whole country by a few bad stories. It is informative for visitation and contains the alphabet to speak both Russian and Ukrainian! Worth the purchase.

CULTURE SHOCK: UKRAINE ranks as one of the best installments of the Culture Shock series. Straightforward and very thorough, it gave this American reader a helpful introduction to Ukrainian culture. Written by an American, Meredith Dalton, who lived in Kyiv for some time, the book tells expatriates what they need to know for a smooth transition to living and working in Ukraine.Ukraine is a very different country from the U.S., and things that Westerners would see as corruption and inefficiency are normal matters there. Dalton is very frank about how to deal with Ukrainian bureaucracy, how to maintain patience, and how to refrain from comparing everything to life back home. While she emphasizes to the reader that Ukraine may be a difficult and sometimes infuriating country for outsiders, she is always respectful of the Ukrainian culture and way of life. This is one of the few books in the Culture Shock series that are so admirably dedicated to preventing culture shock.Meredith Dalton also tackles the delicate issue of ethnicity in Ukraine, and explains how, for some people, the country is polarised into a Ukrainian-speaking half and a Russian-speaking half. However, she also shows how the country is in most respects a united culture in spite of language differences.I felt the section on Ukrainian cuisine could have been a bit more in-depth. Also, the book is geared towards future residents of Kyiv or Lviv, the two cities to which foreigners are most likely to move. As a result, Ukrainian village life is hardly mentioned. However, the meagreness of these topics left Dalton ample room for discussion of Ukrainian custom, etiquette, and superstition.All in all, CULTURE SHOCK: UKRAINE is an essential resource for anyone vacationing in Ukraine or moving there. One of the best Culture Shock guides.

this is a really good book about Ukraine. It talks about everything you can imagine-customs, laws, people, even jokes. Its very accurate and definately brought back some memories for me. If you are traveling to Ukraine and want some insights into ukrainian lifestyle and people this is the book for you.

Although some of the information is outdated in places like Kyiv, great insight to some of the other places. I wish she had more to say about the Western (Traditional Ukrainian) half, but still well worth it.

About the Author

Wonderful way to teach people about polar bears. I have read lots of books on polar bears but really enjoyed the humor in the comic used to explain the life of a polar bear as human science understands it and all without making the bears appear human in personality. I suggest people all ages read to learn and be entertained!

The story and illustrations were not only educational but hysterical. Epic. Jason Viola must be a riot in person because his writing makes all ages laugh....and learn.

Our favorite of the series.

I really like the Science Comic Series. They cover many subject matters, but this one is about Polar Bears as well as what it takes to survive in the high north. It shares information about the formation of ice, the melting of the polar ice caps and global warming as well as what we can do to stop it. We learn about a polar bear family, how they live, what they eat, how they hunt and more. Buckle up as you read this adventure about Anik, Isla and their mother.Join two curious polar bear cubs as they play, hunt, and navigate life in the Arctic. With the assistance of their mother they learn polar bear biology and behaviour, as well as strategies and skills that will help them thrive in a landscape that is rapidly changing beyond their control. Each season brings different challenges and changes in their way of life. We learn about the family unit and why their father is not with them. Even though Isla feels bad for the seals they are hunting, her mother shares that they do not feel what is happening and that they all love the seals, they love them so much they want them inside them. This book shares a lot of information about Polar Bears in a cute and competitive way between siblings. I learned a few things from this book that I did not know about the polar ice caps or polar bears. The graphics are well done. They are not too scary, but the bears are definitely wild animals and although the cubs are cute, they are not pictured as pets. The graphics add greatly to the text and information shared. A great addition to a school, classroom or public library. The publisher generously provided me with a copy of this book upon my request. The rating, ideas and opinions shared are my own.

I thought this was just another textbook. Wrong! It is SO COOL to scan the qr code (easy downloadable app on your phone). This first one in this book is a YT video with Renaissance music. Others throughout the book with videos/websites to explore the topic more. I am currently reading through this book with my 7 year old/2nd grader who expressed interest in inventors. The reading level may be 10+, but the comprehension level is 7+. These are affordable additions to your homeschool history library. I wouldn't be surprised if these ended up in public schools as well. I hope the author continues to write these for other time periods.
