The Goodly Fellowship of the Prophets: The Achievement of Association in Canon Formation (Acadia Studies in Bible and Theology)

From the Back Cover

Just below the surface of any Christian view of the Bible is the knotty issue of the biblical canon. How and when was it decided which books would make up the Bible? What makes a book canonical? Christopher Seitz challenges current understandings of the formation of the Christian canon, showing how the Old Testament fits into the canon's development. Utilizing the latest research on the biblical prophets, Seitz reveals canonical connections woven into the fabric of the Prophetic Books and argues that the Law and the Prophets cohere and give shape to the subsequent Christian canon."Seitz offers an alternative vision of the Old Testament: its structural logic, its internal relationships, its history of formation. The result is incisive, exhilarating, and quite constructively provocative. It will be read and discussed with much profit by theologians, biblical scholars, pastors, and seminarians."--Stephen B. Chapman, associate professor of Old Testament, Duke Divinity School"Seitz has made a major contribution to canonical studies. He argues that the common distinction between Scripture and canon is illusory because it fails to understand the fundamental theological force at work in the prophetic documents that relates them to each other and to the Torah. Seitz shows that the Law and the Prophets of Israel were indispensable to the New Testament not only for the purposes of background, context, and theology but also for the shaping of the New Testament canon itself."--Stephen G. Dempster, Stuart E. Murray Associate Professor of Religious Studies, Atlantic Baptist University"Goodly Fellowship of the Prophets takes the discussion concerning Old Testament canon formation to another level. Seitz mounts an impressive array of arguments against standard conceptualities of Old Testament 'canon development' as he demonstrates that the early church never operated without a canon. With great scholarly care, insight, and breadth, Seitz argues that the material form of the Old Testament canon is a significant hermeneutical matter that demands special attention. This is a work that should shape the discussion within the discipline."--Mark S. Gignilliat, assistant professor of divinity, Beeson Divinity School, Samford University

Summary--In "The Goodly Fellowship of the Prophets," Christopher Seitz attempts to explain his particular view on the canonization process of the Old Testament, specifically as it relates to the eventual theological formation of the New Testament. He contends that many scholars are inaccurate in suggesting that the NT references to "the Law and the Prophets" refers to a fixed and stable Law (Pentateuch) and an unstable, fluid Prophets, nothing more than a random collection of religious documents that did not take shape until centuries later. He states that the Prophets were, in fact, a relatively stable collection of prophetic books (both the sections known as the Former and Latter Prophets), which were compiled intentionally and systematically. He suggests that the prophetic books were not written and compiled in isolation from each other, but that they were brought together with particular attention to each other. Specifically, the Book of the Twelve was one unit of twelve parts, with the twelve parts brought to their final form in relation to the other parts. Finally, Seitz suggests that the third section of the Tanakh, the Writings, were much less defined at the time of the NT, and consisted of a much more loosely organized collection of religious documents which were not compiled with attention to each other but were written as independent units (in stark contrast to the books in the Prophets section).Evaluation--My primary evaluation of Seitz's work is that it was incredibly dense, a laborious book to read and decipher. Since I'm a seminary student but not an academic, he was constantly referring to other academic works which were completely unfamiliar to me, which made it a struggle to understand his points. His writing style was rather inaccessible and cumbersome, so I felt like I was trying to sift through the jargon to even get the main drift of his propositions. The explanation page near the beginning of the book indicates that this is not intended to be an introductory text, and it clearly is not.In my attempts to interpret his points, it became clear that Seitz assumes certain things about canonization that would make many evangelicals squirm, primarily his commitment to modern scholarship's claims about the authorship of OT prophetic books. He assumed that most or even all of the prophetic books were compiled by multiple redactors over time, rather than the traditional single-authorship that many lay people understand for biblical books. Thankfully, his alignment with scholarship does not appear to have removed his ability to appreciate the spiritual value and even inspiration of the Scriptures, even if his understanding of the nature of that inspiration is less simplistic than many of us have been taught in the church.Similarly, I found his presumptions about the authorship of various books in conjunction with each other to be new and slightly uncomfortable, but never disrespectful of the Scriptures. I have always understood that the books of the Bible were all written by single authors in complete or virtual isolation, but Seitz's main thesis is that the twelve parts of the Book of the Twelve were written and compiled alongside each other, with many of the authors keenly aware of the content of the other books. This almost collaborative authorship denies my original understanding of how these books were written but maintains a genuine respect for the formation process, even using the language of the "goodly fellowship of the prophets" to suggest an elevated respect that is due this section of the OT. Rather than a mere collection of random and disconnected books, this entire section was put together intentionally, thoughtfully, and carefully, a proposition that I find to be rather appealing.I was most grateful that Seitz takes the Scriptures seriously. In the midst of a rather academic work, it was refreshing to see his frequent references to "the grammar and logic of the Law and the Prophets," establishing a sense of stability and legitimacy that cannot be assumed among biblical scholarship. Though I'm still processing through some of his implications (and still trying to figure out what he was even saying), this book never seemed irreverent, which allows me to engage with it much more eagerly.

Although this book has some excellent contributions to make to the discussion of canon formation, the writing style is so poor that it is only worth reading if you are indeed very motivated to dig into the details of this debate. His argument for the formation of the prophets section of the OT as being foundational for our understanding of the NT canon is strong and pushes in a different direction from most other works on this topic. So if you are eager to sink your teeth into these questions and debates on the canon, it may be worth mustering up the motivation to wade through the drudgery of this book, which thankfully is quite short.

I was really excited to find a book specifically written for weirdos like me who "read" maps and atlases like a book, love to navigate, and have a strange fascination with globes. Sadly though I couldn't make it past a few chapters of this book. Frankly, Ken Jennings, although a wiz at knowing every obscure worldly fact, is not a writer. The worst part is the hokey jokes inserted as a lame attempt to make this a lighthearted and fun read. The topics seem directionless and mostly sensational than insightful. I'm really disappointed I couldn't enjoy this read more. Maybe I'll skip ahead a few chapters and see if it can still maintain my attention. If so, I'll come back and update this review. Also, the paperback cover design has a hole in the shape of a cutout head, which makes it really uncomfortable to hold because it's right in the center where your fingers grip. Sounds silly but I actually think this matters a lot since you're going to be holding this book for hours.

Ever since I was a kid, I have enjoyed staring at maps and globes, and noticing all the weird shapes and place names and features. Ken Jennings apparently likes this sort of stuff even more than I did, and this book is a delightful celebration of not only a bunch of the specific things he has learned about, but of the whole phenomenon of map-loving.I bought the Kindle edition, and in case you're wondering (as I did) whether it would be a problem seeing the maps and other necessary illustrations in sufficient detail, rest assured that it's not a problem--at least not with a Kindle Fire device, which is what I was using.

The information provided in this book is interesting, but it's ruined by Ken Jennings constantly trying to make terrible puns throughout the book. I found myself sighing or rolling my eyes more often than I should have for a book like this

My son is a HUGE geography buff and he completely devoured this book. I wasn't sure there would be anything in there that he didn't already know, but there was plenty. And just reading a book about geography written by an author who also loves geography was a huge plus. When my son was done reading it, I read it and it helped me understand my son's obsession a little bit more. Thanks for that, Mr. Jennings!

This book started out with a bang. I was eager to read further to absorb all these interesting facts & ideas. Unfortunately, the reading became less & less compelling. Jennings is a talented, humorous & self-effacing writer though. I learned a lot from this book, not the least of which was a simple explanation of the "find the Pokémon characters" craze of a few years ago. Not sure why the author chooses to denigrate "old people". He'll be joining their ranks in a few short years.

This book is lots of fun. I have recommended them to all my friends. If you love maps, you'll enjoy this book. It's humorous, too.

Felt rambly to me, lots of rabbit holes and such. But overall broad overview of geography is great, multi-perspective approach works well.

Fun, quick read. Really enjoyed it. Would add to my Read Again shelf but many of the fun facts will likely be out of date in a few years. Read on a Kindle, I would have liked more photos & illustrations. Would make a great documentary. Cmon Travel Channel!

Review

"Dick Meadows' iconic status begins with his exploits in MACV-SOG and on the Son Tay Raid in Vietnam. This book documents his singular status in the Special Operations community and is a welcome contribution to the literature of the history of Army Special Operations."―Kenneth Finlayson, Ph.D., Lieutenant Colonel, U.S. Army (Retired)""A great read about a great American warrior, The Quiet Professional captures the essence of this humble but extraordinary Special Forces legend, Major Dick Meadows. From the back alleys of Tehran to the jungles of the Ho Chi Minh Trail and the terror-stricken villages of Peru, this Green Beret set the standard that we all aspired to achieve but rarely met."―Major John L. Plaster, USA (Ret.), author of SOG: The Secret Wars of America's Commanders in Vietnam""Alan Hoe has written another very good book about an unforgettable man and SF soldier who our founder would have approved of and liked. He presents the reader with a rounded portrait of an exceptional officer who found his true metier in service with SF in testing times, a modest man of honour who was contect to be 'The Quiet Professional'. . . His book uncovers the very essence of Dick Meadows, for he is writing with clarity about a close friend, never an easy task for a biographer." ― Mars & Minerva""A book about one of the greatest legends in the world of U.S. Army special forces, Major Richard Meadows"―Military Heritage"―Military"This is a well written biography of the extraordinary life of a complex man. It should be on the suggested reading list of the Chief of Staff of the Army for Army leaders at every level and should be found in every soldier's professional library."―Army""This book provides insight into the military career of one of the most courageous soldiers of modern times, and examines the operations of the Special Forces in the Korean and Vietnam wars in addition to hostage crises through the 1980s."―Tucson Citizen"""There is very little public knowledge of how special-operations forces carry out their work or of the half-century effort to develop a joint doctrine of special-operations tactics and techniques. It is an important story, and few men loom as large in it as Maj. Richard J. Meadows."―Wall Street Journal""Every Special Forces soldier should be handed a copy upon becoming an "A-Team" member and told, "This is what it's all about."―Military

A common nickname for the United States Army Special Forces is "The Quiet Professionals." They earned this moniker through being completely dedicated to the task at hand and completing their missions without expectations of fanfare. For the most part, despite the age of mass media and a time where special operations forces (especially Navy SEALs) enjoy fanfare due to their role at the forefront of the Global War on Terrorism, this nickname has continued to apply to the Special Forces. Those who have studied the history of Army special operations, as I have, are familiar with the name Dick Meadows. His name arises at several key moments throughout the Cold War. In the book THE QUIET PROFESSIONAL, retired 22nd SAS Major Alan Hoe, a compatriot of Meadows's, details exactly how Meadows was molded as a man and a warrior, as well as the impact and legacy that he left in his wake.Like so many who enter the special operations field, Meadows grew up a child of adversity, living in abject poverty and growing up functionally illiterate. At the age of 15, Meadows falsified his age to enlist in the United States Army. Five years later, he was the youngest Master Sergeant (E-8) in the history of the US Army. Three years after that, Meadows had become one of the first Special Forces soldiers, and wholly dedicated himself to his craft.Meadows's list of accomplishments include:-being one of the first two Americans to complete the famed 22nd SAS Selection and Training Course-being one of the first to bring freefall parachuting to the special operations toolbox-being the man responsible for providing evidence of North Vietnamese Army presence on the Ho Chi Minh Trail-being the first man to earn a battlefield commission in the Vietnam War (from MSG directly to CPT)-being one of the principal planners and team leaders for Operation: IVORY COAST (the Song Tay Raid)-being one of the key trainers in the formation of the 1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (Delta Force)-infiltrating Iran head of Delta Force, with little tradecraft training, to prep the battlespace, and exfiltrating the country in the wake of the mission's failure-establishing a major and respectable security industry during a turbulent time in PeruThrough Meadows's own words, as well as the words of his friends and those who chewed the same dirt as he, Major Hoe not only paints the impact that Meadows had on the modern United States Army, but his impact on both American and British special operations and on the nation of Peru. We also see first-hand that Meadows is a man with immense love for his nation, for his comrades, and for his family, a man that led from the front at all times.Major Hoe also does a remarkable job of refuting Meadows's regret that "I've not done anything significant." It would be enough to point out Meadows's history, or to highlight that he fought in two wars, or that he is a recipient of:-Distinguished Service Cross-two Silver Stars-a Bronze Star with V Device-the Legion of Merit-Combat Infantryman Badge-Ranger TabMajor Hoe does not stop there. Both through his own words, and the words of those who had served alongside Major Meadows, Major Hoe display how an impoverished teenager grew to be one of the most charismatic and critical components of the Special Forces. To recommend this book to students of special operations history is insufficient. Every red-blooded American looking to learn more about a national hero should read THE QUIET PROFESSIONAL. It is a profound read that will make anyone with a drop of patriotism in their blood take a step back in quiet reflection, express gratitude to have such men as Richard J. Meadows as predecessors in the defense of American freedom, and hope that those present and future can strive to walk in his footsteps.Major Dick Meadows established the standard of quiet professionalism, and every word in THE QUIET PROFESSIONAL hammers that point home. It is a read worth every single minute.

After reading the story of one of the most honorable people that ever served this country, I am simply awestruck. Someone who came from such meager beginnings to have accomplished all Richard did in his life is nothing short of amazing. He came across as someone who made every effort to raise those around him up to his level not beat them down by shame or abuse. When you read the book there is little wonder that those he lead would follow him through the gates of hell with a teaspoon of water to fight with. I have worked with & served under a good amount of people none of which met his pinnacle of honor & devotion. Here is a man who was not a glory hound or a narcisist, instead he was extremely humble & only wished he could have done more for his people & country. Everyone should attempt to immulate his leadership style & put there ego in the closet. He was truly a one of a kind.

An amazing account of s true legendary American hero who was truly a quiet professional. A "must" read for anyone thinking of joining Special Forces or Army Rangers, & those studying the psychology of leadership. A vital history of Special Forces & Delta roots of foundation & dedication to mission, duty, honor and country.

WOW!! I read this book in one day, couldn't put it down. I've read about Richard Meadows in bits and pieces in other books about SF but now I know why he has a statue @ Ft Bragg. He was the perfect SF warrior. He set the example for generations of elite soldiers and for us mere mortals. He was a soldier and man of whom when the misson was too hard, commanders thought of him for success. That alone is worthy of an american hero! His word was all that was needed to silence questions. What a legacy! The human side is not forgotten with the paragraphs on his relationships with his family. One thing is a puzzle, why wasn't he an instructor @ Phase @ Bragg? Robert Howard did the Ranger and SF instructor tours. Only fault, the editing needed some work, the picture of Meadows, Sydnor and Simons has the wrong face to the wrong name! This man is the 1% of soldiers that should be emulated!!

Although I was in Special Forces in Viet Nam when Meadows was there, I have never heard about him. His name came up when I was ordering a book about the formation of Delta Force. What an amazing story about a true hero. Even though he only had a 9th grade education, he was obviously a very smart, driven individual with extremely high standards. He influenced several young officers who went on to wear 4 stars, command Special Ops.Recommend this well-written book. You'll enjoy it.

I don't know where to start in describing how much this book should be on every shelf of anyone who has the slightest interest of anything to do with military history! I'll guarantee that once you start reading this book, you'll have a hard time putting it down! In fact, you'll start to slow down reading it when you realize that you are nearing the end, Why? because you will be realizing that it will soon be over, and you'll want it to continue for several more chapters! Dick Meadows is one of a kind. If only America had more men like him, both on the battlefield(s) and in Washington, We would be in so much better shape as a nation!

There is no doubt that Richard Meadows is a true American hero. I had read about him when I read John Plaster's books about SOG, and the exploits of those amazing men. I would have liked a more in-depth view into Meadows Vietnam exploits, his techniques used to survive in that environment, and how he felt the way the war was run. Not as complete as I would have liked. I didn't know about his post Vietnam exploits in Iran and South America and it only confirmed he was an amazing man. If you are a student of the Vietnam War, it gives you some background about the clandestine operations of that war and its heroes.
