War in Val d'Orcia: An Italian War Diary, 1943-1944 (New York Review Books Classics)

Review

"Origo’s diary is a compelling story of heroism, compassion, and—in the author’s words—‘the most primitive traditions of ungrudging hospitality, uncalculating brotherhood...the shared, simple acts of everyday life." —Vic Sussman, The Washington Post"[War in Val d’Orcia] is a remarkably moving document that, like the best of the elemental war stories, eventually becomes a statement about the unplanned nature and folly of war." —Herbert Mitgang, The New York Times"A welcome rediscovery, evoking a unique, strange moment in civilian/soldier wartime-history with spare, vital immediacy." —Kirkus Reviews"A remarkable war diary." —Daily Telegraph"It is jolting to recall, through Origo’s sober and self-effacing prose, the atrocious conditions of the summer of 1944." —Financial Times

This was a complete surprise, bought on the basis of a review. It is quite unlike any other book I've read (with the exception of Iris Origo's companion pre-war diary "A Chill in The Air"). Direct prose, both expressive and vigorous, characterizes every entry over the year and a half she kept this account. The toll of the war on her Tuscan surrounding and their people is painful to read, especially so at some points. Yet the sense one comes away with it that the common people of the Val d'Orcia were warm, generous, and brave at great risk and sometimes great cost to themselves and their families. Really unlike any other account of the war I've read. It is very hard to put down.

I started reading this book thinking I would be skimming a lot, perhaps shifting between it and another book, but found myself riveted. Just daily occurrences in the lives of a couple..except that couple is an English woman and an Italian count in Tuscany, during WWII and they are instrumental in saving the lives of countless war orphans. Reading the seemingly matter of fact accounts of the daily horrors of war punctuated with acts of true heroism was absolutely riveting, and beautiful. Highly recommended.

This book really described human nature at its best and at its worse. War is a manifestation of people's worse behavior, but the will to survive and help others in stressful times is a balancing positive force that allows us to go on. And for anyone who has been to Tuscany, reading the names of the villages will conjure up the beauty of the land .

Knowing the beautiful verdant Tuscan terrain around Val d'Orcia, I found myself fully imagining the trials of the ground and air war taking place there. Iris Irigo, raising her family with her husband, an Italian landowner, manages to take care of the farmers and children who had to leave their families for their own safety as the war escalates. There are clear descriptions of various national and political factions as well as the Germans and Allies. The day-to-day life of problems and their solutions are clearly depicted by the author. Very engaging for the reader!

Great reminder of what war can do to a people. We in the US NEED A REMINDER WHY our foreign policy has Ben to keep the fighting off our shores

My dad loves this book.

Maintained interest thru entire bookInsight into the political factions that existed in Italy as the Facist regime crumbled and the German army took over

Such a detailed account of the suffering and destruction of war, as well as the heart, humanity, and heroism that sees people through it.
