JARED KIRBY has been involved in Western Martial Arts and Combat for Screen & Stage for over 20 years. He is the editor and wrote the introduction for Domenico Angelo's "The School of Fencing," annotated by Maestro Jeannette Acosta-Martínez. He recently released "The Gentleman's Guide to Duelling" (2014) and Donald McBane's classic martial arts treatise, "The Expert Swordsman's Companion" (2017). PAUL MACDONALD was raised in the West Highland village of Glenuig, Moidart, Scotland. He is the founder and past president of the Dawn Duellists Society and the British Federation for Historical Swordplay (BFHS). Since 1994, Maestro Macdonald has dedicated his path to European arms and martial arts, reviving the methods and techniques of several lost systems, such as the duelling shield, spada in arme, dusack and backsword. In 1998 he established Macdonald Armouries, where he continues to make hand-crafted swords and knives. He received his Master-at-Arms certification from the Italian Federation for Ancient and Historical Fencing (FISAS) in 1999 and established the Macdonald Academy of Arms in 2001. During the last decade, he founded the Commando D Living History Group, and established the Conflicts of Interest battlefield archaeology group. He also continues to serve as a British Army Reservist. BEN MILLER is an American filmmaker and author. For the last thirteen years, Miller has studied fencing at the Martinez Academy of Arms, one of the last places in the world still teaching an authentic living tradition of classical fencing, where he has served as the Academy's chef de salle. He is the author of "Irish Swordsmanship: Fencing and Dueling in Eighteenth Century Ireland" (New York: Hudson Society Press, 2017), the editor of Colonel Thomas Monstery's "Self-Defense for Gentlemen and Ladies: A Nineteenth-Century Treatise on Boxing, Kicking, Grappling, and Fencing with the Cane and Quarterstaff" (2015), and wrote the foreword to the republication of Donald McBane's "The Expert Sword-Man's Companion" (2017).

Really enjoyed learning more about the lives, tactics, and strategies of various Highlanders and their works. The first treatise is quite dense but full of useful information if you wanted to know more about how Highlanders fought in formations and their tactics. Later texts cover a fencing dictionary of the 18th century, an advanced course of historical fencing instruction in broadsword, spadroon, and smallsword, a cavalry text, and some research on the life of Donald McAlpine who taught backsword during the American Revolution.Plenty here for the scholar looking for some first time publishing info and for the historical fencer wanting to learn more about the period that the treatises they study was like.

Fantastic collection of Scottish legends and period fencing literature. Highly recommended for any student in the art of defense. The British soldier's account of the Highlander's battle tactics sheds new light on the martial arts of the Highland clansmen, and is a valuable addition to the historical records!

Great collection of five period fencing manuals, with many great illustrations. Highly recommend this book.

I agree completely with David from Laramie on this one. It's really hard to get grip for whom this book was really intended. The political points are largely poorly reasoned conventional wisdoms, unquestioned and presented in a very assumptive and slightly condescending style. Many of the pop postulates contained have already passed their sell by dates. The descriptive details of the environment and cities are flimsy, often making one dusty Bad Land seem as physically uninteresting as the next. Travel details and advice do not really exist at all. The book is of little use to an advanced traveler who might be considering similar forays and looking for guidance.Bad Lands is a mostly string of personal anecdotes, which isn't a bad thing for this kind of book, however the author is so detatched from his audience that it is hard to appreciate many of those stories. The concept here is a great one, but I suspect the author sacrifices quality thought and writing for the sake of completing the list of countries covered. It completely puts me off of trying out another of his books.

I had high hopes when I first opened the book. After all, with the exception of Burma, these are places I am not likely to want to visit anytime soon. The book tries to be a little of everything, a shallow "political" background plus some description of the local people and a few places to visit, none of which done too well. What a pity, a good idea gone bad.

Wheeler has a great idea for a book, and there is no doubt that his adventures are very fascinating. However, his writing is dry and dull. It's interesting to see where he goes and what he does, but there is not as much of that as there is mounds of dry foreign political history. While some is needed, Wheeler could have held back a bit, and added some more detail of the culture, activities, and people. It's good, but it's definitely no page-turner.

This was a very easy read while still delving deeply into the politics and difficulties of the countries about which he writes.

What a great book! Tony Wheeler turns his practiced travelogue eye to some nasty countries you definitely want to think twice about visiting.

This book is inspirational and it in deed has inspired me to begin my own bad lands travel which has already began.

"Libya is one of the most comprehensively trashed countries I've ever visited." - Author Tony Wheeler in BAD LANDSCo-founder (with his wife, Maureen) of Lonely Planet Publications, Tony Wheeler here describes his travels through nine countries generally considered "bad lands" by Western societies because of their poor treatment of their own citizens, their involvement in terrorism, and the threat they pose to other countries. The nine are Afghanistan, Albania, Myanmar (Burma), Cuba, Iran, Iraq, Libya, North Korea, and Saudi Arabia. Except for areas in Iraq which Wheeler was careful to skirt, none of the nine are particularly dangerous for the individual visitor.In the genre of travel essays, BAD LANDS is commendably out of the ordinary in that it includes a 16-page center section of color photographs. I guess if your book is being published your own publishing company, you can afford this extravagance.While reading the first chapter on Afghanistan, I thought Wheeler's writing rather stiff and I was somewhat dreading the experience of the whole. But in following chapters, he loosens up considerably and becomes a congenial and wryly humorous guide. For instance, this paragraph about Cuba:"Every other woman walking by was wearing the standard Cuban fashion statements: short, tight, low, high, stretched. Preferably in Lycra ... In Cuba no women can be too big, too wide, too round for Lycra. 'Thrusting femininity' was the two-word definition of the Cuban approach to fashion, according to one visiting travel writer ..."Published in 2007, BAD LANDS provides a roomy front window for the reader to peer out into the contemporary society of each nation visited, as well as useful rear window overlooking their recent pasts.I'd award five stars except for the last two chapters, "The Evil Meter" and "Other Bad Lands: The Extended List." In the former, Tony rates, on a scale of 1 to 10, each of the nine subject nations: 1-3 points for domestic oppression, 1-3 for support or participation in terrorism, 1-3 for international belligerency, and a bonus point for Personality Cult centered around the national leader. I didn't mind so much that Wheeler calibrated his meter with such countries as the United States, Australia, the UK, and France and found them registering on the scale, albeit at a low level. But, when he carried the concept over into the latter chapter and mentions such garden spots as Somalia, Congo/Zaire, Angola, Haiti, Papua New Guinea, Pakistan, Syria and (in his mind) the evil conjoined twins, Israel and Palestine, without making even the most rudimentary mention of an obvious twosome, resurgent Russia and China, then I began to doubt his objectivity. Perhaps he should just stay with travel writing and skip the editorializing.

Not a terrible book, but not too interesting either. I thought there would have been some more intersting tales of travels to these “badlands”. Turns out there’s not a whole lot of intersring stories the author has to tell. The author does provide some pretty good historical context about why each of these areas has become what they are.

This is a good text on compression techniques for video and audio signals for industry and academia alike. It serves as a good introduction to the signal processing aspects (without requiring a sophisticated mathematical background) and quickly delves into the practical aspects of implementation. It explains the hardware architectures, and software choices and tradeoffs that one would encounter in the implementation of video compression standards (MPEG 1,2, H.263 etc) and provides an introduction to audio standards like AC-3 and MPEG audio as well. The book also often lists important feature sets of current products in the market. The parts that I found most useful are the discussions (with block diagrams) of ICs and solutions from vendors like C-Cube and TI and the discussion on media processors like Trimedia, MPact etc. At the end of every chapter, resources for further probing are outlined for the interested reader.This book is perhaps most useful to someone with some digital signal processing background, to get an overview of problems and approaches to image, audio and video compression in the industry.The price is somewhat high, but the investment may be worth it for your company, or yourself!

At the beginning of the book was very interesting learning about how ancient Egyptians Believed how earth came about. The concepts of noon is very intriguing. The stories of the Gods and Goddesses are very well written and easy to follow. I wish the author spent more time talking about the underworld though. The stories of the ancient Egyptian people were fascinating. The story of the treasure thief had a very unexpected ending that I was very happy about and gives me a good look at who Ramsey was. The story of the girl with the rose red slippers was my favorite in the entire book. It was very much a rags to riches story. For that story to be one of the last about ancient Egypt there after the Persian army took over is heartwarming. And to know there was a Greek Queen ruling along side a Egyptian pharaoh is quite pleasing. Oliver’s voice was gentle and warm which made the book easy to listen to. I did like how he would give each character in the stories different voices. It made it easier to know who was talking. Definitely a good beginner book about ancient Egypt.

This repair guide compares very favorably to the Haynes guides that I typically purchase to help with maintenance and repairs to the various used cars I have purchased over the years. This book includes a quick reference guide to all of the Suzuki S50/Intruders consumables including oils, spark plugs, gaps, tires (size and psi) etc. It also includes an introduction to all of the various tools that the procedures require and is written in a style that presumes you are an amateur. This book is thick (444 pages) and comprehensive covering simple maintenance to complex repairs and rebuilds. Much like the Haynes guides, this book also includes wiring diagrams to allow for your own electrical troubleshooting. While pro mechanics will probably want to buy the official Suzuki repair manual that costs three times as much, this is the book for everyone else who is interested in doing their own maintenance. Even if you are not mechanically inclined, owning and reading the repair guide to your bike helps immeasurably in explaining problems to your mechanic and in understanding what your mechanic is planning to do. As a final note, if you purchased your bike used without a user's guide, this book covers the maintenance intervals and consumables in a comprehensive enough manner that you can probably go without purchasing a new user's guide from Suzuki.

Sarah Ruden was educated at the University of Michigan, Johns Hopkins, and Harvard, from which she graduated with a Ph.D. in classical philology. She is a winner of a Guggenheim fellowship and a Whiting Creative Nonfiction Grant, and is the author of Paul Among the People: The Apostle Reinterpreted and Reimagined in His Own Time and The Face of Water: A Translator on Beauty and Meaning in the Bible, as well as a book of poetry, Other Places. This translation is in modern English, but with a broad and erudite use of English that I think reflects Augustine's rhetoric abilities. I am encountering new words that as a career teacher with two Masters degrees I haven't encountered before. At the same time, it is very readable and comprehensible. My wife and I spend about 20 minutes a day working our way through the book, taking turns reading and commenting on what we read. I believe it is a valuable update to this classic.

This was a wonderful translation of, frankly a great and hugely important book. I especially appreciated the translators discussions of her word choices and the notes throughout the text were very helpful. I read the kindle version and the notes were very user friendly. I had previously read the Rex Warner translation and I found this one to be as good or better. This is an outstanding book and well worth the time to read and reread. I did like her dedication to her husband where she somewhat apologized for her last dedication to him of the Golden Ass.

I've read "Confessions" before not in the new translation way. Boy! What a difference. It was the same thing with the Divine Comedy. Reading it in its original text was hard to do. But when you read something translated into the English we speak today, you get SO much more out of it. Unless you are a literary scholar and study works like this in their original form, I would highly recommend reading this book, especially if you have read Confessions before and see the difference.

I already feel bad for giving Augustine anything less than 5 stars...This was another one of my book club's selections – I think I might have been the one that nominated it– and I enjoyed it more than I expected. I tend to like stories and biographies where the writer it working out their religious angst, e.g., Paradise Lost, This Spoke Zarathustra, etc... I think most of us have at least some of that...or maybe it's just me.Confessions has some of that, but I would classify it more as a conversion story. I like those, too. The messier the better and this one certainly qualifies. This is the book from which the famous quote, "Lord, make me pure, but not yet" comes. Augustine took his time coming to faith.While others might note his sexual exploits, the angle I found most fascinating was the intellectual hurdles he had to overcome. I'm not saying that faith requires one to make their head subservient to their heart, but Augustine followed pretty much every intellectual red herring that crossed his path.What surprised me most was how easy the book was to read. I think the edition you choose makes a big difference and this one came highly recommended. Being one of the newer translations probably helps a great deal. If you're new to Augustine, I highly recommend reading some of the online assessments of Confessions before, during and after reading. It will help in your understanding.

Sarah Ruden provides a compelling translation of Augustine 's classic Confessions. In no way am I qualified to judge the translation of the Latin but readers will understand clearly why Augustine's preaching astonished his hearers and decisively shaped Christian faith.

I have no Latin and can't judge the accuracy of Rudin's translation, but she brings Augustine to life. I read it as she suggests in short spurts as if it were a diary or journal. And her poem in the preface about translation is wonderful, especially the last verse. Five stars.

I had read Augustine's Confessions twice before, once as a freshman in college and the other in my mid-twenties. I skimmed it the first time, I enjoyed it the second, but it wasn't until I picked up Sarah Ruden's translation that I truly loved it.Her translation is colloquial, opting for contractions and conversational language over thee's, thou's, and so on.
