Strange Frequencies: The Extraordinary Story of the Technological Quest for the Supernatural, by Peter Bebergal

Review

“With all human culture arguably evolved from Palaeolithic shamanism, Bebergal engagingly explores the uncanny overlap between an ancient landscape of occult ideas and today’s techno-saturated environment, from Victorian table-tilting to the digitally remastered voices of the dead; from confidence tricksters, through the desperate or delusional, to the artists and visionaries currently exploring this marvelous, ectoplasm-damp material. An absorbing, comprehensive guide to the high-definition séance parlor of the modern world, and a timely reminder that, in contemporary civilization, we are never more than a couple of centuries away from an alchemist.”—Alan Moore“Even the most well-read esoteric scholar will find some new and fascinating bit of lore in Bebergal’s book… an engrossing read… And as far as tour guides to the occult underworld go, you couldn’t ask for a better Virgil than Bebergal: his prose is warm, clever and erudite without being alienating. Read it with as open a mind as he wrote it and you’ll be bound to pick up a few interesting frequencies on your wavelength.”—Fortean Times“Bebergal dives into the relationship between technical and occult imagination and comes up with something profound about the human experience. By turns funny, spooky, thought-provoking, and moving, Strange Frequencies is brilliant work.”—Daniel Abraham, New York Times bestselling co-author of the Expanse series“This enchanting, insightful book equates the effects of diverse phenomena from Elizabethan stagecraft, cybernetics and handmade automata and the Brazen Head to astral travel and ectoplasmic manifestations—and examines them all in light of the human hunger for a magic that may be far closer to us than we know.”—Maria Bustillos“Bebergal deftly explores how we subliminally or overtly use science and technology to rediscover the evolutionary metaphysical heart of what it means to be human, and our desire to speak with voices no longer bound to the Earthly plane.”—J. H. Williams III, Sandman: Overture, Promethea, Echolands, Batwoman"In these technology-haunted times, we are sorely in need of a guide for the perplexed limning the connections between our eternally seeking souls and our gadget-addled minds. Peter Bebergal is the ideal companion on this quest, finding ghosts hidden in the machines all around us. Strange Frequencies is delightful and engaging examination of the human desire to forge new keys to unlock the mysteries of life.”—Peter Manseau, author of The Apparitionists“Ever dream of building a monster in your basement? Photographing ghosts? Entering drug-free states of euphoria? You’re not alone. In this brilliant, knowing, and thrill-a-page historical and literary exploration, Peter Bebergal explores the human endeavor to use technology to probe hidden and forbidden zones. Strange Frequencies expands how we understand technology, and takes us into shadowy realms where science and strangeness intermingle.”—Mitch Horowitz, PEN Award-winning author of Occult America and One Simple Idea

The book is not what I expected, however the unexpected surpassed the expected. A book can do far more than any machine, and that is what the reading of this book did for me. The reading opened up my magical memories. like a outer mind experience (whatever term it's called) Many thanks to the author Peter Bebergal

This book was recommended by one of my paranormal podcasts. It is not a bad book by any means, but I was surprised at how basic this was. It read more like a New Yorker article (not necessarily a bad thing!) and seemed overlong. I almost never skim or skip, but boy I had to skim through some areas. The writing is good and the author is intelligent, clearly, but what was the point? By the last part of the book, I felt it had better hit its stride, but the sort of cheesy and very personal ending (sorry!) didn’t speak to me. There are so many great introductions to this concept or ones like it, and the sort of non-scholarly almost journalistic approach really hinders this, I think. For an amazing start, read Authors of the Impossible by Kripal. For a much deeper exploration, check out The Occult by Wilson.I wanted to like this, I really did! And the idea is cool, but I just didn’t learn much or take away much from this beyond the idea itself. I think we need to have a higher standard going forward so that we do not simply rehash what has been stated over and over, but to push into new areas and deeper understanding.

This book is the first I've read that explores the new(ish) relationship between technology and metaphysics. The increasing use of technology to access the edges (or the other side) of reality is thoroughly researched and reported in a level headed (almost sceptical) fashion by the author and the book shines for it. The word "Technomancy" best describes what the book is about. This book is one of the harbingers of a new age that was previously only a reality in comic books - where magic and technology complimented each other. Aspiring Victor Von Dooms will tear through this book with aplomb.

This review originally appeared on The Magical Buffet website on 11/14/2018.Can you build a golem such as the ones found in Jewish folklore? That’s the question that launches Peter Bebergal’s new book “Strange Frequencies: The Extraordinary Story of the Technological Quest for the Supernatural”.“Strange Frequencies” follows Bebergal as he travels to Seattle to learn about and build automatons. He spends time in Cambridge to discuss stage magic with actor/magician Nate Dendy who plays Ariel in the American Repertory Theater’s production of “The Tempest”. He attends a traditional Spiritualist séance in Lily Dale, NY with photographer Shannon Taggart. Bebergal explores EVP (electronic voice phenomena) and experiences machines designed to facilitate enlightenment. Throughout these adventures Bebergal explores the origins of the DIY/Maker movement and the effect it has had on the exploration of the spiritual.“Strange Frequencies” is an amazing exploration of the technological influencing the spiritual and the spiritual inspiring the technological. This is a must read.
