Fr. Goldmann was a seminarian in Germany at the beginning on WWII and was drafted into Hitler's SS. This graphic novel biography (based on his autobiography by the same name) tells of dangerous and unbelievable events during the war that lead to his continued formation, secret ordination, and ministry to Catholics during a time when openly sharing one's faith often led to death.The first half of the book covers Goldmann's service during the war and imprisonment after. It is followed by a text epilogue covering the events of the rest of his life as well as dozens of photographs and primary sources. The novel also includes a section with the script and sketches for the making of the graphic novel, which would be awesome for aspiring little authors.Graphic novels and WWII are both perpetually popular content in my classroom library, so I knew this would be a winner among my 5th graders. I thoroughly enjoyed it as well, and now need to borrow the original book from my dad. The life of Fr. Goldmann gives us a different perspective of the good that triumphed during a terrible time in world history, the profound power of prayer, and the guidance and protection found in the shadow of His wings.
I found this book while browsing graphic novels written by Garth Ennis and Nathan Edmondson. It combined two disparate genres - war and the lives of the Saints. This appears to be the passion project of a NYC graphic artist named Max Temescu. Temescu admits he is not a Catholic. But this reads like a SGT Rock comic book told from the German point of view. When reading this book, I asked myself what motivated this man to do what he did and live like he lived. When you are placed in an extreme situation, the person you are at the most elementary level comes out. For Goldmann, it was to be a priest. What a powerful testimony and witness to faith. The novel abruptly ends. Most of the Nazis are illustrated as creatures rather than everyday people. Then there is an epilogue at the end that is also memorable. I am not going to spoil it. Let's just say the photo album itself speaks volumes. Good book
This is such an amazing story. I recommend buying more than one because you will likely know someone to share this great experience with and it is hard to let your only copy of such a great masterpiece as this go. The longer novel with the same name is also amazing.
My 12 year old devoured this in Christmas day. The combination of the graphic novel and historical documents and photos was a superb way to relay heroism in service to Christ in deplorable circumstances.
Good graphics, the story could have been better. But i usually don't read comics.
i am trying to cancel the graphic bio copy, i reordered the regular shadow of his wings non graphic. i cannot find out how to get a refund on first purchase. right now i'm billed for both
This graphic novel is both well written and beautifully illustrated, presenting both an important historical account and a true example of heroic Catholicism. It can be enjoyed by both children (though due to the subject matter, exercise appropriate discernment) and adults. .
My eleven-year-old son absolutely loved this book!!! He is intrigued by the WWII era, and that element, plus the faithful Catholic tone, really kept his attention while reading this book. He couldn't put it down, and read it in one day. The illustrations are very good, and the story line is devoted to remaining true to your beliefs, even when it can cost you your very life. A truly inspirational true-life tale of a little-known hero of WWII Germany.
