Enjoyed the story and illustrations but wish there were more vibrant color in the drawings. Fun plot with a message for kids.
J.C. Hsyu and Kenard Pak have made a wonderful book. The story is sweet and well told and the artwork is simply beautiful. I hope to see more books from them in the future! Highly recommended.

A hardworking young man, taken in by neighbors after the death of his parents grows up. His adopted parents try to find a suitable wife for him with the help of a matchmaker, but they fail. He continues to faithfully work hard and show kindness to others. One of those kind acts is to feed a snail he finds. He starts to return home to find grand meals ready for him. And when he finds out who has been leaving meals for him, he discovers an unexpected surprise and blessing.A sweet fairy tale about the a well-deserving man being rewarded for his faithful hardwork and kindness, even though he doesn't expect any reward. The illustrations are charming and remind me of Klassen with a distinct Asian flavoring. A few vocabulary words appear with the Chinese character above the illustration of the object, and there's a note in the back of the book about Chinese calligraphy. Definitely a great story to include in fairytale units, or read when talking about having a good character or when studying China. Compare/contrast this with the Korean version of the tale, THE SNAIL LADY.
I actually quite enjoyed this book, both for its similarities to many Japanese folktales I know (which makes sense, geographically), but also because the story was less about the marriages that are sought at the beginning, and more about generosity and the rewards of hard work. Also, I really liked the pages at the end which give a little lesson on Chinese calligraphy, and how it was most often inspired by the shapes of the things it is meant to represent.As I said, this is similar to some Japanese folktales I know, but it avoids one of the more unsettling aspects: a marriage by capture. While Tuan the farmer does wind up with a mythical creature at his service, it is a rather benign arrangement. He takes a snail to keep as a pet, feeding it well, and finding his household blessed with sumptuous food each night. He ambushes the mysterious cook, to find that his snail transforms into a beautiful lady. Rather than being captured, she gives him a final gift for his care of the snail and disappears, this making me a bit less nervous.I'm not too great on Chinese culture and folklore, so I can't say if this is a great source to build a school unit on, but it is entertaining enough for the home. The artwork is a mix of traditional cartoon and Chinese calligraphy, which is quite interesting to look at. And the story covers several bits of life in pre-Communism China. Give it a try from your library, and then make your purchase decision.
The Dinner That Cooked Itself is a gorgeously illustrated fable type story set in ancient China. It is one I enjoy reading with my daughter and giving her a small taste of Chinese culture.Story: Tuan longs for a wife but, for various reasons, all the available women are not suitable matches. When he finds a large snail and feeds it, he is astonished to discover a full meal always waiting at his house. Was it the neighbor's wife? A friend? Who can he thank for his bountiful meals? It's then that he discovers the snail he has been feeding is actually a fairy.The Swan Maiden fairytale (usually referred to as Hagoromo or feather cloak in Asia) fairy tale is given a different spin here, with the shell being the maiden's home. This is a gentler version of the tale, which usually meant the enslavement of the fairy/maiden. Here, when she is discovered making his food, she says her name is White Wave and she must leave him because he's seen her. It's far kinder than the typical Crane/Swan maiden stories.The artwork is quite lovely - with a painterly feel to the backgrounds and then digital art on top with textures and motifs. The illustrations are full page in several areas and quite striking.In all, a lovely, light, and enchanting children's book.Reviewed from an ARC.
